Is Kate really the only choice? Probably.

28, July, 2010 Mandy Discuss it What they said
CHELTENHAM, UNITED KINGDOM - MARCH 16: Kate Middleton, the girlfriend of Prince William, looks on from the Royal Box on the fourth day of The Annual National Hunt Festival held at Cheltenham Racecourse on March 16, 2007 in Cheltenham, England. (Photo by Ryan Pierse/Getty Images)

In an article for Taki’s Magazine, writer Nadine Jolie says that Prince William has to settle for Kate Middleton whether he likes it or not. Settle he has – it seems that no one else can be produced nor are they willing to step forward. Or, God forbid, Kate and Wills really love each other!

Jolie lists a few potential mates that she says would be preferable to Miss Middleton: Princess Madeleine of Sweden, Princess Theodora of Greece and Denmark, and Monaco’s Charlotte Casiraghi, Grace Kelly’s granddaughter (how would that be for Anglo-American relations!).

Even though Europe still has a few single princesses up its collective sleeve, it would seem improbable that the heir to Queen Elizabeth II would marry another royal or a European at this point. However, to this blogger, marrying another royal would benefit the monarchy in Britain. The girl would already be a princess to begin with, so no speculation about social climbing. She would most likely have money, so there would be no accusations of “gold digging”. The girl would know what is expected in a royal marriage and already be acclimated to the limelight. The perfect solution!

Jolie produces some good ideas, except for Charlotte Casiraghi. I like her, but she is not British princess material. She’s far too carefree, having lived the glamorous high life in her family’s Mediterranean principality since she was born. Charlotte is undoubtedly elegant and poised, but the British Royal Family would be too restrictive for her. Monaco is royalty with a small ‘r’; Britain is royalty with a capital ‘R’ with mountains of world history on its shoulders. Diana Spencer was looking to marry into what she thought would be similar to Grimaldi glamor, but she realized too late that the Windsors did not work that way.

Jolie also points out that many aristocratic, well-heeled girls like Diana already knew that about their monarchy and turned Prince Charles down. The same can most likely be said for the aristo English roses of today. Arabella Musgrave, Olivia Hunt, and the triple-barreled traditional aristocrat Isabella Anstruther-Gough-Calthorpe are all shying away from being a royal bride. So, Kate Middleton it is.

Charlotte has her grandmothers poise, her mothers spunk and her grandfathers brains, and I do not think very much would bother this incredible young, beautiful lady.

I feel Charlotte would fit just fine into the British royal family. The girl has class, elegance and she most of all has BRAINS. She knows what is excepts of a roy, now to act and when not to stick her foot in her mouth. She also know just how far to push and not get pushed over a cliff, by the old guard.

I doubt she's been asked to sign any agreement. After 9 years I couldn't blame her for cashing in.

I don't see the relationship dynamics being all that different. They're pretty similar.

  • http://younghotandroyal.wordpress.com/ Sam

I think the difference is that Emma and CP have remained friends, while that would be neigh impossible for William and Miss Middleton. It's uhm…difficult. The relationship dynamics are different and also, Emma isn't one to cash in. She has money of her own, she's friends with CP's sisters… No reason for her to do anything of it.

Rumour is Kate has signed an agreement she won't sell her story. Dunno how much of it is true.

I don't see any chemistry between Miss Middleton and HRH. I think it boils down to the fact that Kate is already trained and William doesn't want to bother with having to train up a new possible royal bride.

She's getting what she wants but it seems pretty obvious that he's settling. Kate has become a celebrity because of her relationship. She'll never be just an ordinary English girl again. I think that even if Wills doesn't admit it publicly that he is a little afraid of the potential for Kate to make a huge payday off their relationship. Sure, no one wants to admit that she'd do it but if he really dumped her for good and moved on after 9 years I think she probably would.

I don't see Kate fading off into the sunset discreetly like Emma Pernald did.

Give me an email address and I'll zap it over.
The public is a strange thing. It can be easily influenced with the right words, the right action. Unfortunately, royal families don't always have the best PR people in the world, it seems (look at the mess that was Princess Madeleine's split with Jonas Bergström, she knew FOR A YEAR what had happened and this on again off again handling was terrible).

One of the problems with Wills and Miss Middleton is that they got together so early in life. I don't usually agree with most of what Prince Charles says, but it's true that it would gave done William good not to bind himself in school already. How many relationships break up once the people in question have their degree? I keep thinking they only stayed together because Miss Middleton was hanging on to it and for William is convenient, and she had proven to be trustworthy, at the very least.

Charles and Diana… Didn't work on so many levels, I don't even know where to start. That was a marriage that was over before William was born and it only slid from bad to worse from there.

Hasn't Harry tried to get his brother to listen? I was reading something along those lines a while back, I think it was concerning the break up from three years ago. About how Harry was less than thrilled about her in general and William being with her in particular or something.

I would like to see that article, because I don't know how anyone could justify that it would be hard to terminate the relationship. Unless they are genuinely in love, this dragging on is pointless and they should split. It just doesn't look good to be a mere girlfriend this long. If they are in love, they should marry. If not, then move on. I don't think anyone would mind or judge too harshly. If anything the public will be glad they didn't marry if it wasn't a true love situation.

Some people criticize the Prince Charles/Diana Spencer match as being rushed by Prince Philip. He has been reported as saying, “Pull your thumb out and get on with it” in his inimitable way, and therefore Charles felt pressured to pop the question. In this case, I am hoping someone says something along those lines to William pretty soon, because ten years is a little long! :)

I've read an interesting article a couple of weeks ago, actually my friend sent it to me via email, I'll have to dig it up… It mainly focused on Miss Middleton and on her way from where she was to who she is now. Actually, it doesn't seem to be online anymore, too bad (ran in the Calgary Herald, if you want to track it down). Anyway, I certainly didn't agree with all they said (as it was very pro-Kate anyway) but it was interesting nonetheless and made obvious, how hard it would be for either of them to terminate the relationship at this point.

It's just so sad, in a way. Not that their lives personally touch me on a more than remote basis, but the chemistry is simply not there. There's waiting and hoping, but ultimately I just don't see it. Look at other couples (royal, to get a comparison) who've been together that long or longer, I can to this day see more chemistry between Konstantin and Anne Marie (or beware, the newlyweds Victoria and Daniel) than there seems to be between William and Miss Middleton.

I've made a blogpost a while ago, and I still stand by that:
Fact is, as far as seems to be true at least: William is not currently interested in marriage. And I can’t even blame him for that, quite aside from the small matter of me not being fond of his current girlfriend-slash-bedwarmer. Once he marries he will be under the obligation to produce an heir (and spare), and he can forget his flying career even before the first three years are up, let’s not even talk about an additional three years he’s been talking about before. The RAF is his priority in life at the moment and why not? Once he’s Prince of Wales, there will be enough stress and obligations in his life then so he won’t have to burden himself with that now.

I just don't know what the right solution would be. Of course, he can wait until they're both way over thirty and then argument that putting her through two pregnancies would be a risk but… I'm not sure how thrilled everyone will be with that solution.

I am starting to think it's mere convenience, too. The Royal Family was waiting to see how Kate adjusted to the limelight and the prospect of royal duties, but by year five they all should've known where they stood. So now what?

Actually, I think it would be a relief to people if William and Kate decided to part ways, regardless of who initiates it first. At this point the public probably just wants a decision, period. Sure, William might get blamed in some corners for “stringing her along”, but it takes two to tango – Kate didn't have to stay this long without a ring.

  • http://younghotandroyal.wordpress.com/ Sam

Princess Caroline wasn't very interested in Prince Charles, way back in the day (before she married Junot, even, but Grace had high hopes for her daughter). Further problem would be that Charlotte is Catholic and I'm not sure how fond of converting.

Theodora has whisked herself off to Hollywood and all the more power to her. She's also too closely related to William, while a 3rd degree relation isn't anything to raise an eyebrow about in royal circles, her parents are related several times over already, so that might not be such a good choice. Don't want to further the disadvantageous gene even further, do we? Besides, as much as I like Theodora, and as much as the Brits like the Greek royal family, as long as Kontantin is alive at least there is way too much baggage involved there. Both Theodora and Philippos will have problems garnering royal spouses, although I'd guess Anne Marie would be happy for at least one of them too snatch a prince or a princess *shrug*

Madde, Madeleine that is, is the most logical choice, it would also strengthen the ties between the British and the continental royals again, which have been sorely neglected over the past few decades. I'm simply not sure how interested she would be *g*

As for Miss Middleton, so far it's looking more and more like she's simply convenient. Sad as it is to say, but I fail to see any chemistry between them; instead William gets regular baths drawn by his live-in gf, regular sex provided by his live-in gf and regular pizza bought and cooked by his live-in gf. Huh.

But he can't break up with her either, because after nine years, he'd the an asshole. And she won't break up with him unless he cheats on her (and even then…), so he'd be an asshole too. Rock – William – hard place.

Do I like Miss Middleton? Probably not, but I really couldn't care less if it looked like love and less like 'oh she's there, I can make use of her'. Good riddance, the man can go gay for all I care (still a few princely options there, too).

What I do have to say is, I was a bit shocked by the recent pictures of her at the charity polo game. That can't be a good trend.
