Today King Willem-Alexander gave his first speech from the throne as monarch. Beside him was his wife, Queen Maxima.
The king thanked everyone for the “heartwarming welcome of my kingship”. He also thanked his mother, Princess Beatrix, for her years of work as queen. Heart-wrenchingly, the king also expressed his gratitude to the nation for their sympathy after the death of his brother, Prince Friso, barely a month ago. The king’s other brother, Prince Constantijn, was in attendance with his wife.
Known as Prinsjesdag (Prince’s Day) today is the day that the monarch of the Netherlands addresses a joint session of the Dutch Senate and House of Representatives in The Hague. The Speech from the Throne, as in the United Kingdom, sets out the government agenda for the coming parliamentary session.
