The Countdown To Royal Babies: Is Kate Next?

English: Her Royal Highness the Crown Princess...

It’s 2012, and there are royal babies on the way!

HRH Princess Marie, wife of Denmark’s Prince Joachim, is expecting her second child later this January. The baby will be Queen Margrethe’s eighth grandchild.

In Sweden, Crown Princess Victoria (left) and her husband, Prince Daniel, are expecting their first child this March. Their baby will be the first grandchild for King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia.

In England, Autumn Phillips, wife of the Queen’s eldest grandson, Peter, is expecting her second child in late spring/early summer. Autumn and Peter’s first child, Savannah, was born in December 2010. Little Savannah is the first great-grandchild of the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh.

Of course, the world is awaiting the announcement of a pregnancy from the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Some expect it to be any day, some think an announcement may come later. No matter when it happens, we will be very happy for Prince William and his bride, Catherine.

The Duke and Duchess married in their late twenties and Catherine – who turns 30 this month – has taken time to fit into royal life. This is quite the opposite situation of William’s mother, the late Princess of Wales. Diana had just turned 20 years old at the time of her wedding to Prince Charles, and she gave birth to William the following year.

I wish Wills and Kate the best, and no matter when they choose to have a child, it will be a very lucky baby, indeed.

Here, I model a version of Crown Princess Victoria’s pink rain coat (click to enlarge).

Pink raincoat

It was given to me as a Christmas gift one year, just before I saw a photo of Princess Victoria in her jacket. Pink is our color, don’t you think?

Crown Princess Victoria’s Hair

November 13th, 2010 No comments

Sweden’s Crown Princess Victoria has lovely hairstyles for formal royal events, but for everyday royal duties, Victoria usually just tucks her hair back into a ponytail and gets on with the job. The shape of the Princess’ face, however, is not complimented by such a severe hairstyle. Here is an idea I had for her hair – long with layers (a la Photoshop). Click to enlarge the image:

Princess Victoria’s hair would look beautiful. Like Princess Marie of Denmark, a good cut with sideswept bangs means you can – literally – just let your hair down without worry. No need for a ponytail any more!

(The hair used on Victoria actually belongs to US television personality Daisy Fuentes.)

Victoria and Daniel’s New Home: Haga Palace

June 30th, 2010 No comments

The Swedish Haga Palace is the new official residence for HRH The Crown Princess Victoria and her new husband, Prince Daniel. They will move in upon their return from their Tahitian honeymoon.

King Gustav IV Adolf had envisioned a home in Haga just outside Enskede, so he commissioned architect Carl Christoffer Gjörwell to build a modern palace in the style of an Italian villa. The result looked less like a palace and more like a large, sunny country home. It has been used alternately as a private home and a summer house for several members of the Swedish royal family over the years.

Haga is the birthplace of Princess Victoria’s father, King Carl XVI Gustaf. The King – Prince Carl Gustaf at the time – and his four sisters spent their childhood at this palace with their parents, Hereditary Prince Gustaf Adolf and Princess Sybilla.

Young Carl Gustaf played happily on the grounds with Princesses Margaretha, Birgitta, Désirée, and Christina and they were photographed enjoying their small playhouse in the park. The Swedish media and the public were charmed by the royal children, especially the girls, who became affectionately known as Hagasessornas, “Haga Princesses”.

The death of their father in an airplane crash in 1947 outside Copenhagen, Denmark, devastated the family. Princess Sybilla, who felt as though “the floor fell out from under my feet”, took the children to live in an apartment at The Royal Palace in 1950.

Haga, abandoned as the official home, was left empty for several years. King Gustaf VI Adolf eventually transferred its ownership to the Swedish government for use as a guest house for visiting dignitaries in 1966.

Happily, Haga reverted back to Royal property in 2009. Just after Princess Victoria’s engagement was announced in February 24th of that year, Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt declared that the rights of disposal to the palace would be transferred back to the royal court as a wedding gift to Victoria and her new husband, Prince Daniel. Attempting to echo the sentiments of Winston Churchill upon the wedding of Princess Elizabeth in 1947, Reinfeldt said: “[T]he royal engagement [i]s a beacon of light in the dark times of economic crises.”

This happy, warm palace looks extremely welcoming and should be perfect for the beaming royal couple. Congratulations to Victoria and Daniel upon the return of a very precious family home.
