Discuss – Greece: to reign or not to reign?

November 3rd, 2011 1 comment

Would the country of Greece today fare better with a monarch? Should Greece allow King Constantine and his family a place in the government or at least a symbolic role? How would it change the nation for the better? For the worse?

Discuss it here.

Their Big Fat Greek Wedding

August 25th, 2010 No comments

Prince Nikolaos and Tatiana Blatnik have tied the knot today, surrounded by family and friends. The wedding took place on the Greek island of Spetses, in the Cathedral of Ayios Nikolaos (Saint Nicholas) church.

Tatiana is now known as Her Royal Highness Princess Tatiana of Greece and Denmark.

A few people have asked me why the Greek royal family are known as princes/princesses of both Greece and Denmark. This is because King Constantine is a male-line descendant of Christian IX of Denmark, so he and his family retain this title. Constitutional changes, however, removed the Greek royals from the line of Danish succession since they are a lower cadet branch of Denmark’s House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg. Prince Nikolaos of Greece and Denmark is set to marry his fiancee, Tatiana Blatnik, tomorrow afternoon. The wedding is to take place on the Greek island of Spetses.

Nikolaos is the second son of former King Constantine II of Greece and Queen Anne-Marie. He is a close relation to many royals across Europe and is the nephew of two Queens – Queen Margrethe II of Denmark (his mother’s sister) and Queen Sofia of Spain (his father’s sister).

Bride-to-be Tatiana holds a degree in sociology from Georgetown University in Washington. She studied public relations in Switzerland and currently works in the PR office of Diane von Furstenburg.

As mentioned in an earlier post, Marie-Chantal of Greece and her husband, Prince Pavlos, welcomed a fifth child whose name had yet to be known.

It has been announced that their 3rd son is named Aristidis Stavros, who is a prince of Greece and Denmark. His paternal grandparents are ex-King Constantine of Greece and Queen Anne-Marie of Greece (and a princess of Denmark).

Greek Royals’ Brood Expands

Crown Princess Marie-Chantal of Greece gave birth to her fifth child, a son, the day before her thirteenth wedding anniversary with her husband, Crown Prince Pavlos of Greece.

The new baby joins the royal couple’s four other children: 11-year-old Maria-Olympia, nine-year-old Constantine Alexios, and three-year-old Odysseas-Kimon.

While the family continue to use their royal titles, the Greek monarchy was actually abolished in 1974 with the rise of the Hellenic Republic. The king is referred to as “ex-King” Constantine of Greece.

The former Marie-Chantal Miller, daughter of the duty-free shops “king” Robert Miller, married Prince Pavlos July 1, 1995 in a traditional Greek Orthodox ceremony in London.

Princess Alexia of Greece had her youngest child, Amelia, baptized on the island of Lanzarote. The ceremony was witnessed by dozens of family members.

Guests included Amelia’s maternal grandparents, the former King Constantine and Queen Anne-Marie of Greece and other royals.

Princess Alexia and her husband, architect Carlos Morales Quintana, married in London in July 1999. They live on Lanzarote in a house Quintana designed specifically for his family.
